Potassium
metabisulphite is a white crystalline powder with a pungent sulfur odour. It
is also known as potassium pyrosulfite. Its chemical formula is K2S2O5 and
has monoclinic crystal structure which decomposes at 190 °C,
yielding potassium oxide and sulfur dioxide:
K2S2O5(s) = K2O(s) + 2SO2(g)
It is mainly used as an antibrowning agent, antioxidant and preservative.
It is a disulfite and is chemically very similar to Sodium Metabisulfite,
with which it is sometimes used interchangeably.
Potassium metabisulphite is
generally preferred out of the two as it does not contribute sodium to the
diet. It is soluble in water and insoluble in ethanol.
Potassium metabisulphite is a light cream colored
material, free from foreign particles with faint smell of sulphur dioxide
gas. It is always acknowledged for its effectiveness, precise ph value and
accurate composition. Extensively used as a photographic chemical,
pharmaceutical chemical, laboratory reagent and in dyes in various
industries including :
- Oil Field Company, Photographic Industry, Color Fixer &
Developer, Textile Industry, Leather Industry, Film Processing Labs,
Liquid Fertilizers and many more...
- Potassium metabisulphite is a food preservative. Also, found naturally
in wine. Known as an antioxidant preservative, potassium bisulfite has
some antioxidant capabilities, and can fight inflammation-causing free
radicals in the body.
Potassium metabisulphite is a food preservative, which
preserves the natural color of food and protects food against bacteria. Food
manufacturers use potassium metabisulphite to preserve the taste of
dehydrated foods and to make these foods more palatable.
- Potassium metabisulphite cannot preserve certain kinds of foods,
including raw fruits, vegetables and meats. However, the substance can
preserve fruits as part of the canning or dehydration process.
- Potassium metabisulphite is mainly used in winemaking industry as an
additive during the bottling process. When potassium metabisulphite is
added to the wine, a sulfur dioxide gas forms, which destroys
microorganisms in the wine and prevents molds and bacteria from growing
inside the wine bottle. Additionally, potassium metabisulphite is a
strong antioxidant that protects the color and flavors of the wine.
